A lush, fussy-cut floral quilt inspired by the Kaffe Fassett Seed Packets pattern and reimagined as a generous king-size heirloom.

Target size
110–112″ square
Feature blocks
8″ fussy-cut florals
Border blocks
4¼″ supporting florals
Palette
16 Kaffe prints

Design concept

A garden that becomes denser toward the edges

The center highlights the largest blooms as framed botanical portraits. As the composition moves outward, the flowers become smaller and more numerous, creating the feeling of a garden spreading beyond the bed.

Build plan

This plan preserves the look of the original while scaling it for a king bed with meaningful side and foot overhang.

01

Choose and order

Purchase the curated 16-print palette in half-yard increments, reserving the strongest large-scale prints for 1½-yard cuts.

02

Make windows

Create transparent 8″ and 4¼″ fussy-cutting windows. Audition motifs before cutting into the fabric.

03

Cut hero blocks

Cut the 8″ feature blocks first from the largest motifs. Smaller motifs and remnants feed the border squares.

04

Design the layout

Balance warm and cool colors, avoid clustering repeated prints, and let the largest flowers lead the composition.

05

Assemble the center

Piece the large flower blocks into rows, alternating pressing direction so seams nest cleanly.

06

Grow the garden

Add rings of smaller blocks until the quilt reaches approximately 110–112″ square.

Binding note

Bias-cut stripe for movement

A striped binding can be cut at 45° to the grain to create a barber-pole effect around the quilt. For a non-striped binding, straight-grain strips are simpler and completely appropriate.

First entry

The palette is chosen

Sixteen Kaffe Fassett prints were curated to create a balanced mix of hero blooms, supporting florals, and texture. The next milestone is ordering fabric and building a paper design wall from scaled print images.
